Hayners at War (part 1)

Haners of various spellings who served in
the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and America's Civil War

compiled by

Ed Haynor, Newayo, MI
2-16-2016

Note: This research reveals Haners of various spellings who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. These Haners immigrated to North America before 1800 to serve in the Revolutionary War or are descended from those who did. Other Haner descendents from earlier ancestors served during the War of 1812 and/or the Civil War or other Haners who immigrated to North America sometime after 1800. This compilation is not complete, but represents all known Haners of various spellings, whether they are descended from the mainline of Johannes Häner or not. The author of this publication welcomes any corrections or additions to this record. He can be reached at ed@ncats.net.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR

The American Revolutionary War 1775-1783 was also known as the American War of Independence.  Thirteen American Colonies that joined together as the United States of America in July 1776 led a successful military rebellion against Great Britain.

These listings include Haners of various spellings who served in the American Army (Colonists) determined to seek their independence from England; Loyalists who served in the British Army fighting against the Colonists; and Hessian soldiers from Germany, who were mercenaries hired by England to fight the Colonists.

The following list of Haners is not complete, and some persons may be listed more than once because they either may have signed up for additional service periods or the spelling of their name varied in the recordkeeping of these lists.  Persons named Haner of various spellings are included because most persons during this time period could neither read nor write, making it very difficult in determining any continuity of surname spelling. This compiled list was obtained from a variety of ancestral websites.  A list of Continental Army units (1777–84) can be found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Continental_Army_units_(1777%E2%80%9384)

*Frederick Haner’s estate was confiscated, as found on http://threerivershms.com/nyrevconfiscated.htm. This website contains information on individual estates confiscated from persons who had aided the British. These confiscation laws were part of overall anti-Tory laws passed during the time of the Revolutionary War. A good resource on this subject can be found at: http://www.toriesfightingfortheking.com/Punishing.htm, where each original state had its own laws.

The Old United Empire Loyalist List

The following is a list of Haners (Hainer) who served as Loyalists to the Crown and fought on the side of England in the Revolutionary War.  The list is likely incomplete.  It can be found on a website named “The Old United Empire Loyalist List” at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~apassageintime/uelist/h.ue.html and at “Roster of Butler’s Rangers”: http://www.sandycline.com/history/rangers.html.

Hessian Troups in America During the REvolutionary War, 1775-1783

The following list is of persons named “Heiner,” as it was commonly spelled in Germany, who fought as Hessian Soldiers on the side of England in the Revolutionary War.  The list has been compiled from a variety of genealogical websites, particularly the Hessian Regional History Information System (LAGIS) at: http://lagis.online.uni-marburg.de/.  No other “Hessian” Haner of any other spelling was found listed at LAGIS.

The Hessians were 18th-century German auxiliaries contracted for military service by the British government, which found it easier to borrow money to pay for their services than to recruit its own soldiers. The British used the Hessians in several conflicts, including in Ireland, but they are most widely associated with combat operations in the American Revolutionary War.

About 30,000 German soldiers fought for the British during the Revolutionary War.  Nearly half were from the Hesse region of Germany; the others came from similar small German states.  Several more German units were placed on garrison duty in the British Isles to free up British regulars for service in North America. American patriots made propaganda use of the fact that the soldiers were non-British and portrayed them as mercenaries. They also offered Hessian soldiers land bounties to desert and join the Americans.

For a more comprehensive discussion of Hessian Soldiers see the website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hessian_(soldiers)

WAR OF 1812

The War of 1812 was a 32-month military conflict between the United States of America and Great Britain.  The outcome resolved many issues that remained from the Revolutionary War.  The United States declared war in 1812 for several reasons. Among these were trade restrictions brought about by Britain's continuing war with France, the impressment of American merchant sailors into the British Royal Navy, and British support

for American Indian tribes against American expansion.

Below are Haners (of various spellings) who served during the War of 1812, which lasted into 1815.  Because these men were in state militias, it is not known if they were engaged in actual battles.  This list is probably incomplete, and duplicates are likely listed.  Listings were found on various genealogical websites.

All persons named Haner of various spellings are included because many persons during this period could neither read nor write, making it very difficult to determine any continuity of surname spelling.

Canadian “Haners” who served in the War of 1812 on the side of the English from the Canadian website at: http://www.baclac.gc.ca/

Some of the following names might be duplicates, or there may have been Haners of various spellings who shared the same first name.  In the case of the multiple Henrys and Isaacs in the First Lincoln Militia, one man may have re-enlisted several times, or there may have been a father and son involved. The list is provided here with the information shown as the author found it. It is not known why the names of two women were included among those who served.

CIVIL WAR

The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was fought from 1861 to 1865, after seven Southern slave states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America.  The states that remained in the Union were known as the "Union" or the "North."  The war had its origin in the divisive issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories, as well as issues regarding states’ rights.  After four years of bloody combat that left more than 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began.

Listed below are persons with the surname Haner of various spellings.  By the time of the Civil War, various spellings of Haner continued to be used. As this chart shows, several hundred persons with the surname Haner, of various spellings, served in the Civil War.

This list of soldiers is incomplete, and information on each soldier is incomplete. Duplicates are likely listed and (because of alternative name spellings) may not be “Haners” at all but rather other soldiers with similar surnames.  The material shown here has been compiled from several sources, and the information included is based on what appeared in those sources.  No attempt was made to cross-reference any individual to any other individual.  If you find an ancestor on this table, the data may serve as a basis for your further research.

“Mustered out,” refers to being released from service, discharged usually under honorable conditions or killed in action.  Civil war soldier listings were found on various genealogical websites.
